Like most other industrial products gun magazines have also evolved considerably over the passage of time. They have come a long way since the first one used in the Henry repeating rifle way back in the year 1860 and has not looked back since then. The next to use magazines were the Spencer repeating rifles used in the American Civil War and used rimfire metallic cartridges as contents. It introduced the early time’s tubular magazines. These magazines were also used in the bolt-action rifles during the 1880s and later.

During the First World War fixed gun magazines were used in guns but the inconveniences of it prompted the users and manufacturers to switch to a detachable version of the magazines. Use of detachable magazines in guns started extensively after the Second World War. Firearms that use detachable magazines have an opening called magazine well in which the magazine is inserted. It requires a lock and release mechanism.
