They have come a long way since the first one used in the Henry repeating rifle way back in the year 1860 and has not looked back since then. The next to use magazines were the Spencer repeating rifles used in the American Civil War and used rimfire metallic cartridges as contents. It introduced the early time’s tubular magazines. These magazines were also used in the bolt-action rifles during the 1880s and later.

Box Type Gun Magazines
This type of magazines for use in guns came up during the later part of the 19th century. They were either fixed or detachable. The detachable box magazine made its debut in 1864. On the other hand, unique rotary magazine built inside the receiver was used by Krag-Jorgensen rifle produced in Norway. The box-type was followed by clip type magazines at the end of the 19th century that were inserted from the top and ejected from the bottom.

Evolution of Modern Gun Magazines
During the First World War fixed gun magazines were used in guns but the inconveniences of it prompted the users and manufacturers to switch to a detachable version of the magazines. Use of detachable magazines in guns started extensively after the Second World War. Firearms that use detachable magazines have an opening called magazine well in which the magazine is inserted. It requires a lock and release mechanism.
